Backrooms (8.2/10)

This is a sci-fi horror film that really leans into both genres, making it a fairly niche experience. If you're not a fan of sci-fi and horror, this probably won't be the movie for you. As someone who loves both genres, I know my rating is likely higher than someone who doesn't. The film kept me completely engaged from beginning to end, and once the credits rolled, I was left questioning everything I'd just watched. There's a lot happening throughout the story, and I found myself looking up explanations afterward to better understand some of its ideas and themes. Renata Reinsve delivers an excellent performance, and I was pleasantly surprised to see her take on a role like this after being more closely associated with dramatic films. She brings a grounded presence that helps elevate the film's more unsettling and surreal moments. Overall, this isn't a movie made for everyone, but if you enjoy thought-provoking sci-fi blended with atmospheric horror, it's a rewarding and memorable watch.
